Katamari Damacy is a videogame with a daunting premise - rebuild the cosmos. No pressure, then! Originally released on Playstation 2 in Japan and the US in 2004, the game tasked you, the prince, to roll a sticky ball (the katamari) around real-world locales, collecting anything and everything in it’s path to increase it’s size - pencils, plant pots, animals to vehicles, all the way up to cruise ships, islands and clouds. Depending on your success, your katamari would be rated by the ‘King Of All Cosmos’, who just so happened to be your father. Whatever the result, the katamari is sent into space to become a new star. If you think it all sounds ever so slighty strange, you aren’t even halfway there!
Part of Katamari Damacy’s cult success was down to it’s fantastic soundtracks (the sequel We Love Katamari was released in 2005), which feature some sweet/crazy/borderline insanely hummable tunes. Better than your average J-pop, plenty of musical styles are covered: electronica, swing, lounge, jazz, rock, dance, everything’s thrown in and suits the madcap world of Katamari Damacy perfectly. Even beatboxing is covered courtesy of Japanese beatboxer Dokaka, who you might of heard unknowingly while listening to Björk’s ‘Triumph Of A Heart’.
